Content Development

Many business website owners make the mistake of building a website that contains hundreds of products and very little informative content. While your goal may be selling more product, it will be impossible to do so if your prospects do not feel a sense of trust that you will deliver and service them. Your content needs to create that feeling without being a sales pitch. You need to speak to your user and offer them information that will cause them to develop trust in you as a resource. Adding free tools, free reports, free how-to articles or videos are just a sample of what you can do. This content needs to inform and build trust.

As part of this effort, the content needs to utilize keywords. The keywords with the greatest impact should be in your content. This means developing relative content for them first. The website must be developed naturally, so make sure that the content is relevant and makes sense. Don’t overuse keywords, simply make sure that they are contained within the title, heading, and first two paragraphs on your page. Do not try to optimize for multiple keywords on the same page. Keep in mind with these rules that you still want to develop useful content even if it is for highly competitive keywords, just don’t be surprised if it takes a lot more time to for that content to rank with the search engines.

Perhaps the most important element of all your content is the headline. Create a headline that captures the reader and causes them to react and read your content. Make sure your content lives up to the headline.

Writing content is an art. If you are not a good writer you should hire a professional to create your content. There is no substitution for creative, well-written information. It’s hard to sound like an expert when your writing is confusing and boring. You must find a way to draw in the reader and build the bridge of trust. If you have the passion then start by writing your article, and then turn it over to an editor to clean up for your website. The key is that your user should get value from your content, so that is first priority.

Many website owners ask, “What if my content doesn’t work well with my keywords?” This can be confusing, but the best practice here is to create the best content you can. If you can work the keyword in, then by all means do it. If not, focus on strong, well-written content. The long-term value of good content is long-lasting traffic that views you as an expert in your niche.
